For Sale: Phoenix Sold on 2/20/2018
Phoenix was sold to the wonderful folks that sailed her all over the Atlantic and into the Pacific in the 1980s. They are beginning to retire and have decided to take another turn at cruising. Our greatest hope? To sail into some anchorage and see her there in all her classic beauty. We are sad it won’t be us at her helm, but no one could deserve her more than the folks that rebuilt her the first time!
Here is the original for-sale posting:
We are getting older and have moved to a larger boat that was offered to us by good friends at an attractive price. We are interested in passing on some of our savings to make serious offshore cruising possible for a young sailor or sailing couple who otherwise might not be able to go now. If you have been busy acquiring the skills and knowledge to go cruising, want to go offshore cruising soon, and are ready to take on a fully re-done gorgeous classic steel boat that has sailed tens of thousands of miles but doesn’t have the beam-busting volume of newer boats, Phoenix may be the boat for you. We love her and want to make sure she doesn’t linger in some marina but is actively used for cruising.
Phoenix is a 1967 Ohlson 41, one of five built by Einar Ohlson in Goteberg, Sweden. The beautifully elegant rolled steel hull was made in the Hitter yard in Amsterdam. She is a late CCA racing boat 40’9″ on deck, a cutter-rigged sloop – quite similar in design to the better-known Rhodes Reliant (but with a more modern cutaway forefront, fin keel, and skeg-hung rudder). She draws 6′ 6″, has a beam of 11’3″, and displaces approximately 13 tons. She has raced twice in the Bermuda cup, in 1968 and again in 1971. She voyaged from Florida to Northern Europe and back to San Francisco by way of Brazil with Seven Seas Sailing Association Commodores in the 1980s, has been through the Panama canal, and then lived in California for many years. In 2008 she took us from Seattle to Hawaii.
Her steel hull and plywood decks were completely rebuilt for her 2017 departure for Mexico. She is currently a few months into an extended Pacific tour so she is completely ready to go, lying in San Francisco. Phoenix is a US Coast Guard registered boat.
