Rigging Your Cruising Sailboat Yourself

April 14, 2022 1 Comment

The rig of a tall ship is not what we are talking about in this article, but the picture is stunning.

Replacing the standing rigging in your own boat is a bit scary the first time. Let us take the mystery out of it for you.

The Northern Sea (of Cortez)

June 16, 2021 Leave a Comment

The northern parts of the Sea of Cortez captured us wholly. The clear waters so delightful for dipping; the pelicans landing in an explosion of flying water and then calmly eating the fish they had caught; the rays leaping in diamonds of water; huge Fin whales blowing and heard half a mile away; the orange […]

Hauled out in Puerto Peñasco

June 11, 2021 Leave a Comment

We just arrived in Puerto Peñasco after a long day and night and morning of hand steering with moter until it died, then sailing and hand steering, and finally pushed the mother ship the last 100 yards using the dinghy. We were then hauled out onto land after nearly a year and a half in […]

North up Baja: La Paz to Loreto

May 25, 2021 Leave a Comment

What a splendid part of the world for boating! Quiet and even isolated anchorages that provide great swell protection, cute towns, spectacular weather. Who could ask for anything more? Well, maybe a working anchor windlass! Yes, ours packed it in, again. Jon rebuilt it last year and had the foresight to plan for a more […]

Puerto Balandra and La Paz

May 15, 2021 Leave a Comment

Wow – Puerto Balandra is a winner. A lovely lovely anchorage with calm waters, white sands, and green Caribbean waters. Yes, lots of locals and hired boats visit during the day, but the nights are quiet and the bay is large enough to accommodate the traffic. Just 12 miles from La Paz it is convenient […]

Crossing the Sea, Los Muertos & Los Frailes

May 15, 2021 Leave a Comment

The passage was a little bumpy during the night – lots of waves but not much wind – and no wind during the days. But the second night was the worst, we got no sleep and were tossed much of the night. This is a shortcut that is not worth it – go to Mazatlan […]

Where are We Now?

Status: The boat is on the hard, waiting for renovations. We are traveling in the US this summer, then spending the fall in San Miguel de Allende.

NOTICE: Due to lack of internet connectivity, this map will not be updated unless we are in internet or cell range. Click on the markers to see when we were when.

During passages the map above will be updated each 1 to 3 days while we are moving.  Use the buttons to zoom out and see previous positions. Click here to see larger map.

Our Story

Our first offshore trip was from Bellingham, WA to Hawaii and back. Then we quit our jobs, sold the house and headed out again from Bellingham. In San Francisco we changed boats.  We are currently cruising slowly in Mexico. Read about us, about our boat Eurybia, or use the menu (above) or search (below) to find our technical articles. Please sign up for our occasional newsletters (see the footer of the page) as well. We look forward to meeting you in comments here and in anchorages around the world. Fair winds!

What does Eurybia mean?

Eurybia (u-RIB-ia) is the Greek goddess representing Mastery of the Seas. Her name in Greek means “far-reaching power”. Eurybia is the daughter of Gaia (earth) and Pontos (seas). Her grandchildren include the Anemoi (wind gods) and Astraea (starry night) who became the constellation Virgo.
